Job Title: Mechanic
Reports to: Transportation Coordinator
Dept/School: Transportation
Pay Grade: AX6
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Support transportation operations by providing safe, efficient and quality service including but not limited to diagnosing, maintenance and repairing school buses, white fleet and other equipment as directed under minimal supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education/Certification
High School Diploma or GED Clear and valid Commercial Drivers License-Class A or B with P&S Endorsements Successful completion of behind-the-wheel training Successful completion of 20 hr. Texas Department of Public Safety Certification Course State of Texas Vehicle Safety Inspector License, preferred
Minimum Experience
2 years experience in whole vehicle repair 2 years experience driving a vehicle
Special Knowledge/Skills
Advanced knowledge of automotive mechanics and maintenance. Advanced knowledge of school bus chassis and body repair. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently. Ability to access, read and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance inspection rules, procedure manuals and vehicle service manuals. Ability to operate tools and equipment involved in vehicle repair. Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts. Ability to operate a school bus. Effective organizational, communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to pass DOT physical examination by an appropriate health professional designated by the district Ability to pass administered drug and alcohol tests Ability to have clearance on criminal history check Ability to have acceptable references Ability to have an acceptable driving record
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Responsible for checking buses for specific standards of performance and operation.
- Evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles using diagnostic equipment.
- Rebuild, replace or repair major vehicle components, assemblies and systems including engines, transmissions, suspensions, etc.
- Check and repair electrical and cooling systems.
- Install heaters and similar accessories.
- Do welding and perform minor body work.
- Analyze engine performance and perform tune-ups as needed.
- Perform routine vehicle maintenance and preventative care.
- Ability to diagnose and repair air conditioning systems.
- Ability to diagnose hydraulic and electrical wheelchair lift problems
- Operate tools, equipment and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform jobs.
- Help keep shops, equipment and tools in safe operating condition.
- Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to the supervisor immediately.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
- Drive any bus route at anytime needed
- Other duties as assigned
EQUIPMENT USAGE:
Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles.
WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL DEMANDS & ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS:
Posture: Frequent standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Motion: Frequent walking; frequent climbing, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension and overhead reaching; frequent driving.
Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying (45 pounds and over) on a daily basis.
Environment: Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials, noise, vibration and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours.
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress.
